Deadly Premonition 2 has had it’s fair share of criticism lodged against it since it launched in June. The vast majority of that criticism thus far was aimed towards the games performance, namely the incredibly inconsistent framerate. However something else has upset a large number of players, causing game director Hidetaka Suehiro, also known as Swery, to personally apologize on Twitter.

The criticisms that have caused the apology come because characters within Deadly Premonition 2 can often be seen referring to a transgender character by their deadname, the name they were given before transitioning. Not only this, but incorrect pronouns are used when referring to said character. In his apology Swery has stated that at least one scene will be rewritten.

Swery, who is a native Japanese speaker, penned his own apology saying:

“Dear DP fans,
I would like to tell important message.

I realized by pointed out from friends,
i might have hurt transgender people in my scenario
It wasn’t intentional. I am really sorry for that.

Some scenes will be sanity checked by a team
that included diversity.
And I will rewrite that scene ASAP.

So please continue to support Deadly Premonition.

I’m the one writing the scenario.
So the characters are not responsible. My fault.
Please don’t hate them.
SWERY”

It’s ultimately disappointing that it made its way into the game in the first place, but with the game out now an apology and rewrites are the best outcome.

Issues aside, we scored Deadly Premonition 2 a 9/10 in our review with reviewer Ricky saying “Deadly Premonition 2 just wants to tell its story, tell it well, and be its own weird, little self. Your ability to either live with that or not will determine how deeply you fall in love with the citizens of Le Carre.”
