Dead or Alive 6 only released two ago but Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo decided to pull the trigger early today and release a free-to-play version of the game for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Like the free-to-play version of Dead or Alive 5, this is called Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters and includes a surprising amount of content.

Those who opt to pick up Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters will be restricted to four characters from the game’s large roster: Kasumi, Hitomi, Diego, and Bass. That being said, all of these characters are incredibly varied and players actually have access to quite a few modes. Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters players can try out the introduction to the story mode, DOA Central, some DOA Quests, Versus, Time Attack, Arcade, and Training modes. While the initial roster may be limited in Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters, it will give players a good taste of what the game has to offer.

I enjoyed Dead or Alive 6, so if you haven’t played it yet and are interested in doing so, Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters is the best way to try it out. That being said, I am frustrated and wary that this version of the game released only two weeks after the base game that cost $60 and had a $93 Season Pass at launch. Considering the main game doesn’t even have online lobbies for yet, I can’t help but think that some players who paid full price to pick up the game on day one will feel a bit cheated.

While we are still waiting on online lobbies, the release of Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters also comes alongside the second major update for the game. According to Koei Tecmo, this update adds more difficult DOA Quests, some new victory and entrance animations, and tweaks how many costume parts are earned for individual tasks. If you are only of the players that shelled out $153 dollars to get the full game and first Season Pass before you knew a free-to-play version was releasing, the Happy Wedding Vol. 1 costume pack released today as well.

You can watch the trailer featuring those DLC costumes below. Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters is now available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If playing this version of the game does end up inspiring you to pick up the full thing, Dead or Alive 6 is currently available on Amazon.
