Dead by Daylight is a 4v1 survival horror title from Behaviour Interactive, and it’s become an incredibly popular title. However, the game itself isn’t that accessible, especially for disabled players. A colorblind mode has just been announced, though only because one of the studio’s developers complained about users asking for colorblind modes.
The thread itself went up on Twitter on January 21, 2021. The below embed shows off 3 different colorblind modes that are being added to Dead by Daylight. It’s also revealed that these have been in development over the last few months, and the studio wanted to announce the features, but given the comments from a developer have decided to announce it now.
Players can expect to see the update and a new HUD “by the mid-chapter release” with further colorblind support on the way. Behaviour Interactive also states that these are the “first steps” the studio is making to make the game a more accessible experience.

As for the comments and the controversy, a developer from Behaviour Interactive was doing live-stream while playing the game. During the stream, as clipped and available to watch in the below-embedded tweet, they say, “Alright JC, it’s getting really boring just blabbing about colorblind mode all the time, we’ve heard it a million times, we know. Continuing to badger us about it isn’t going to change anything.”
The developer adds, “If it gets done it’ll get done when we have time to do it, or if somebody decides that it’s something should- that should be done. Ya know. We, we know that a lot of players want it, we know it’s not a small number. We get it.”

The developer’s comments have circulated across many disabled advocates circles since and obviously forced the studio’s hand to confirm that it has been working on colorblind support. Unfortunately, what seems like it would have been a welcomed announcement has now turned into a sign of proof that accessibility efforts are being made. The studio has also confirmed that the views expressed in the video are not indicative of the team.
And let me tell you, as someone who advocates for accessibility in video games, and is disabled, hearing someone state that they’re bored of hearing more players wanting to enjoy their game is kind of a kick in the teeth. Imagine how bored players are at being unable to play games they want to play because accessibility was an afterthought.
