Today, during the live version of the Major Nelson Radio podcast from PAX West in Seattle, Microsoft and Studio MDHR showcased some new and beautiful gameplay of the upcoming indie darling Cuphead.

Interestingly, we get to see the shop and the game’s tutorial. On top of the gameplay, we also get to see a few screenshots taken from the game’s cutscenes, which we haven’t seen much of yet, and they look as charming as the the rest of the game.

Interestingly, we hear that the developers created Developers created over eight different layers of watercolor paintings per scene to capture the parallax effect and give a sense of depth. For instance there often are three different layers of clouds moving at different speeds. Foreground elements are blurry and so forth. There even are scenes that have a whopping twelve layers of paintings.

Everything was painted and animated by hand, and in the end the game includes over 120,000 frames of animation, all painstakingly created in a totally analog way.

You can check out both the gameplay and the screenshots below. If you want to see more, you can enjoy another video, some charming screenshots and artwork, and some more info about the game here, and here. You can also give a look at the rest of the Xbox indie lineup with a recent sizzle reel.
