As one of the most hotly-anticipated games of the year (and potentially of the generation), Cyberpunk 2077 met the same fate as a number of high-profile AAA titles in development this week by being delayed to later this year. While originally it was intended to release in April 2020, CD Projekt Red announced that the game would now be coming in September 2020 just ahead of the launch of the next-generation consoles. While delays are always disappointing to a degree, especially for fans, several employees are assuring those waiting that it will be worth the extra time.

In response to the delay of Cyberpunk 2077 to later this year, several members of the CD Projekt Red development team expressed their thoughts on Twitter to assure fans and followers that the extra time is being used to make the game the best that it can be. This includes a tweet from senior level designer Miles Tost, who said that while fans might be let down by the delay, explained that “it will be worth it in the end for sure” and thanked fans for their support. Likewise, CD Projekt Red QA lead Łukasz Babiel said on behalf of the studio that “we’ll deliver, don’t worry.”

Given the level of anticipation that has surrounded the game for the past several years, it’s encouraging to see that CD Projekt Red developers are trying to quell fan disappointment of the delay. With other anticipated games for this year having been delayed, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake and Marvel’s Avengers, delays are far from an uncommon occurrence in game development, and at this point natural in the cycle of getting a game closer to release.

However, the employee’s statements also come at a point where CD Projekt Red expects that there will be substantial crunch at the studio heading into the game’s final months before release. Especially with crunch being such a focal point of the discussions around labor in the games industry, it remains to be seen as how to how the extra months of development on Cyberpunk 2077 may come at the cost of impacting its development team.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia on September 17, 2020, and you can pre-order the game right now over on Amazon.
