Borderlands Franchise Is Getting Review-Bombed on Steam Due to Exclusivity Deal With Epic Store

Yesterday, we saw developer Gearbox Software unearth a Borderlands 3 announcement trailer alongside the long-awaited September 13 launch date, but PC fans weren’t a bit happy about this exclusivity decision that it will be available on the Epic Store for the first six months. Angry steam players have been so enraged by this news that they have taken to leaving negative reviews on anything Borderlands-related.

The outraged fans have left hateful reviews on not only Borderlands 2 but other titles as well including Borderlands the Pre-Sequel and Borderlands Game of the Year and just in case the message wasn’t crystal clear, many of them also come with ASCII art of raised middle fingers which also are included in a few positive reviews as well from those fans who like the games but are still unhappy. The good news is that we are slowly starting to see a flow of more positive reviews in the hope of counterattacking the negative ones.

This isn’t the first time this has happened as at the start of the year it was announced that Metro Exodus would be sold exclusively on the Epic Games store. This decision was met with the same kind of mindset from annoyed players, especially the ones who had pre-ordered the game already although this was honored by Epic prior to the news. Epic Games Store head Steve Allison had said that the company doesn’t want to go down the Metro incident path again and expressed his regrets during a Q&A by saying “We don’t want to do that ever again.” in how the news was broadcast.

It’s actually quite sad to see gamers respond this way especially since the Borderlands franchise is so well loved by many. In my opinion, a little competition never hurt anyone and its not like PC players are never going to play Borderlands 3 on Steam – the exclusivity only lasts until April 2020. I really do wish that we could just enjoy the games we get without the hate, but it is the internet after all where everyone has an opinion – including myself.

Either way, we will all get to hear a lot more about Borderlands 3 when the game gets a reveal event which is scheduled for May 1.

Borderlands 3 will release September 13 on PS4, Xbox One, and exclusively via the Epic Store for the PC version.
