Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan revealed today that his team at Blizzard are implementing a new mode into the game. The Overwatch Workshop is a place where players can use their creativity and programming skills to create new game modes. If you want to watch Kaplan’s full update, you can see it at the bottom of this post.

The Workshop seems like a great new addition to Overwatch. Putting the tools of mode creation in the player’s hands can only speed up the process of innovation. That said, Kaplan was quick to note that this is a “power user” feature. If you already have some idea of programming and game logic you’re likely going to get more out of this initiative. However, the team is trying to make it as accessible as possible.

Kaplan gave a few examples of modes the Blizzard team has already cooked up while testing the feature. Molten Floor sees your hero light on fire when they’re on the ground. The other mode has every player start as the same character and, after a set amount of time, everyone switches to a new character. These simple examples are just a peek at what could be possible.

There is a lot here and the blog post on Blizzard’s site is very lengthy. Kaplan also talked about how the Workshop Inspector helps you debug your script and mentioned how easy it will be for users to share their modes. If you’d like to dig in further, make sure to check out that blog post.

The Overwatch Workshop is currently testing on the Public Test Realm (PTR). After the PTR phase is finished, the Workshop will be available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Until then, console players can enjoy playing through the new Storm Rising event and continue working on their Baptiste play.
