Telltale Games, a developer who rose to prominence thanks to their great choice-driven and story-focused adventure games, infamously and abruptly shut down last year. Initially, many of their games and IP were left in limbo, but that has changed over the course of the last year. Skybound saved The Walking Dead: The Final Season early on in 2019; then, a few months ago, a company called LCG Entertainment bought the rights to the Telltale name and catalog. It was a controversial move, but LCG seems adamant to continue the Telltale brand via releases like The Telltale Batman Shadows Edition.

Athlon Games and the new Telltale struck an agreement to re-release many of the original Telltale’s games earlier this year, and The Telltale Batman Shadows Edition is the first game to come from that. It bundles the two seasons of Batman: The Telltale Series together and includes a new “Shadow Mode” filter. Shadow Mode gives the games a greyish, noir look, though it will occasionally sprinkle in some color to accentuate the characters. It seems inspired by the Graphic Black filter from The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series, so filters may be something Athlon Games and LCG decide to include in their future re-releases.

According to LCG Entertainment and new Telltale’s Chief Revenue Officer Brian Waddle, this is only the start of LCG’s Telltale plans. During The Game Awards, we learned that AdHoc Studios revived The Wolf Among Us 2, and the first game is poised to be re-released with the help of Athlon Games. With all of these projects on the horizon, Waddle hints that this is only the start for this new version of Telltale and that we will be hearing more in the future. “We’re excited to be able to build and continue the legacy of an iconic Telltale Games franchise by launching The Telltale Batman Shadows Edition today. This is just the beginning in a much more expansive plan to build on our catalog of Telltale Games titles, which we hope to discuss in further detail in the coming months.”

Whatever your thoughts are on this revived Telltale, whatever it does next will certainly be intriguing. The Telltale Batman Shadows Edition is available for PS4 and Xbox One today and is coming to Nintendo Switch and the Epic Games Store “in the near future.” The whole package will cost $29.99, while those who already own the game and just want the new Shadow Mode can get it as DLC for $4.99.
