These days, it’s no surprise when a game gets delayed. After all, we’re still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic that has thrown more than a few hardships at studios working to develop video games. So, when Lightning Games announced the delay for ANNO: Mutationem today, it was almost expected. Plus, given the state another cyberpunk game just shipped in, it makes sense to get this one working as intended.

Jokes at Cyberpunk 2077‘s expense aside, I think most fans will be perfectly content with this announcement. While ANNO: Mutationem has looked great in trailers up until now, you’d always rather have a game that runs well than not.

If you haven’t seen ANNO: Mutationem before now, it’s a gorgeous-looking action-adventure game with some light RPG elements. It uses a “2D-meets-3D” art style to give it that visual flair, while also incorporating it into the gameplay. Obviously, it’s not going for as much as something like Cyberpunk 2077, but it manages to capture the genre aesthetic well in promotional material.

Of course, looking good in a trailer and playing well are two different things. Hopefully, this delay gives the Lightning Games team enough time to work out all the kinks. And, as they mention in their announcement, this should help get the game ready for PS5.

ANNO: Mutationem will launch sometime in 2021 on PC, PS4, and PS5. If it looks up your alley, make sure to keep your eyes peeled. The team took part in The Game Awards’ Steam Festival with a demo. Steam Fest will run again this spring, so you might have another chance to check out ANNO‘s demo.
