Animal Crossing and Ska Meet in Cover from Skatune Network

Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Culture, Nintendo, Originals, Ska, Skatune Network, Switch

So, what’re you jamming to in Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Maybe K.K Metal, or K.K Cafe or one of the musical pooch’s other tracks. Or maybe you’re like Jeremy Hunter, the name behind Skatune Network, and you can’t get enough of the theme song. If that’s the case, you should get a load of their up-beat cover of the game’s title track.

For those new to Skatune Network, they’re a single musician that covers tracks in the greatest genre of the 80s and 90s: ska. That’s right, skanking isn’t dead, and neither are checkerboard shoes or mutton chops. But I digress. Skatune Network is a huge fan of games, and their covers reflect that. If you head over to their channel on Youtube, you can find covers of Hyrule Temple from Melee, the Mii Channel and of course, the obligatory Megalovania cover.

But today we’re here for their cover of Animal Crossing: New Horizons‘ theme song. Which naturally, is fantastic. Skatune Network’s covers are more than just transpositions of the original song to a new instrument. They totally recreate songs using multiple instruments, sometimes fitting in new sections or just riffing over others. In this song, they use every instrument at their disposal to make a version of the song ripped straight out of the 90s. I can almost hear The Mighty Mighty Bosstones playing something like this between songs.

If you want to support Skatune Network on their never-ending quest to revive ska, there’s a number of ways to do so. Of course, you can just follow their Youtube or Twitter. If you’re especially impressed by what you’ve seen and heard, you can also head over to their Patreon right here.

In other news, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has the record for first-week physical sales in Japan for a Switch game.
